Paul McCartney 'Nearly' Joined Them Crooked Vultures

Paul McCartney has revealed he asked about joining Them Crooked Vultures on bass, only to be told by Dave Grohl thatJohn Paul Jones had already beaten him to it.

McCartney said he was first told about Them Crooked Vulturesby Dave Grohl when the two went out to dinner together after playing together at last February's Grammys ceremony.

"We went out for a bite to eat afterwards and Dave told me he was starting this band with Josh [Homme]," he told the Daily Mail. "I asked him who was playing bass and he rather sheepishly told me he'd approached John. So you read it here first; Paul McCartney was nearly the bass player in Them Crooked Vultures."

McCartney also admitted that he was in two minds about whether to appear on The X Factor last year.

"When the offer came through it polarised a lot of people. Lots of my friends told me not to do it and it's not exactly [Later With…] Jools Holland. It's a pop show. But what turned me around - apart from the huge audience - was the fact that it's a family show, and so many kids I know are obsessed by it."

He went on to say that if the talent show was good enough for Beyonce, "it should be good enough for me".

NAMM 2010: Joe Satriani introduces the Ibanez JS2400

Ibanez have just posted this video on their Official YouTube Channel to coincide with the release of the Ibanez JS2400 at Winter NAMM 2010. Joe explains how Ibanez worked with him to create a cutaway that was aesthetically pleasing but gave complete access to the 24th fret and how he worked with Steve Blucher and Larry DiMarzio to select a single coil sized Humbucker that would retain the tonal qualities of the JS Series and compliment the Mo Joe. The Pickup that Joe and the Dimarzio guys selected was the Pro Track which as you can hear from the demo above actually sounds very much like a DiMarzio PAF Joe, at least when Joe plays it it does!

I think the single coil and the extended cutaway give the guitar a very different look but it also retains the smooth curves of the JS which make it so unique in the current Ibanez product line, I think these guitars are going to literally fly off the shelves. Personally, I’m happy with my 22 fret JS, which Guthrie Govan refers to as a “grown ups guitar”, but like Guthrie I do have a 24 fret guitar that I can turn to should I wish to regress

Reverend to display the Unknown Hinson at NAMM

Reverend has cooked up a new signature guitar with Unknown Hinson, the self-proclaimed King of Country Western Troubadours, and underground guitar legend. The guitar fulfills Hinson's need for a lightweight semi-hollow guitar that can cover everything from authentic Country twang to classic rock Hippy Mess.

Based on the Club King model, this guitar has a smaller, lighter body, and full-length center block for increased clarity when using overdrive. The two Reverend P-90 pickups in combination with the Bass Contour control deliver a wide pallete of tone options. The black color scheme, bat inlays, engraved pickguard, and included Coffin Case complete the vampire-meets-hillbilly vibe. Other key features include a korina body with solid spruce top, 24.75" bolt-on maple neck, and Pin-Lock tuners. Available in Black only. List: $1329, Street $1099.

The Unknown Hinson Signature will be on display at NAMM booth #1372.
